A Snorkelling Paradise

The great barrier reef around Low Isles comprises of 150 species of hard corals and is dominated by 15 species of soft corals. Living amongst the corals in the blue lagoon are a large variety of reef fish including angelfish, damselfish, anemones, giant trevally, sweetlip, fusiliers and many green turtles are sighted daily.

The Sail & Snorkel Tour

We moor in the sheltered blue lagoon for 5 hours... join the guided snorkel tour and relax or explore the island. Experience a trip on the glass bottom boat viewing incredible coral and fish. Don't miss out on the wonderful buffet lunch. After a great day on the reef just laze on the deck sailing back to Port Douglas Australia, enjoying the magnificent vistas.

On Low Isle, a number of bird species reside on the island. You may encounter pelicans, honeyeaters, white breasted wood swallows, mangrove kingfishers, reef egrets with sea eagles and ospreys wheeling overhead. The lighthouse was built on Low Isle in 1878 and was automated in 1993.

The reef around Low Isles comprises of 150 species of hard corals and is dominated by 15 species of soft corals. Living amongst the corals in the blue lagoon are a large variety of reef fish including angelfish, damselfish, anemones, giant trevally, sweetlips, fusiliers and many green turtles are sighted daily.

Taking the Island Heritage Walk is a 'must do' when visiting Low Isles. Learn about the history of Low Isles and its environment. Low Isles is situated on a large oval 200 hectare coral platform and consist of a small coral cay, a large mangrove island, mudflats, seagrass beds, and coral reefs. The islands are surrounded by 5.5 acres of coral reef very close to the islands, making it an ideal area for snorkellers. The mangrove island is Woody Island is uninhabited except for a wealth of bird species - a vital habitat.

Weather data has been collected on Low Isles since 1887 and scientific associations date back to 1928 when it was the base for a year long scientific survey which studied the structure and ecology of the surrounding reef. This study was the first detailed study of a coral reef from Low Isles anywhere in the world and many current theories of coral reef are based on the findings of this expedition.

The Low Isles are located within the Marine National Park Zone of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and is under the protection of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority.
