Hamilton Island Golf Club

Golf Course Information Designed by champion golfer, Peter Thomson, the par 71 championship Hamilton Island Golf Club on neighbouring Dent Island measures 6,120 metres (6692 yards). The only championship island golf course in Australia, the course has been designed to challenge all levels of golf enthusiasts, from resort guests to professional golfers. Given the changes in course elevation; restricted landing areas and the ever-present breezes will provide a definite challenge from the back tees and enjoyable resort golf from the forward marks. The course is designed as a series of holes strung along the ridges and played across steep valleys and the course layout works with the landform, with generally broad fairways taking the “line of least resistance”, avoiding the steeper, more sensitive areas. The par 71, 18 hole course features two distinctly different nine hole circuits returning to a central clubhouse with panoramic views of Dent Passage and Hamilton Island. The outward nine holes are a more compact layout around the centre of the island and the inward nine are strung out along the ridges to the south. The island's natural and rugged beauty, together with its mountainous terrain affords stunning 360 degree views across secluded coves and beaches to adjacent passages and islands, and the mainland beyond. Getting There Hamilton Island is one of the 74 tropical islands in the Coral Sea, between the Queensland coast and the Great Barrier Reef. It is the largest inhabited island in the Whitsundays, positioned nearly half way between the coastline of Brisbane and Cairns. The only island in the Whitsundays with its own commercial airport, there are direct flights to Hamilton Island from Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Cairns and good connections from other major Australian cities. By boat, Fantasea Cruises operate regular 30-minute services daily from Shute Harbour (on the mainland). Hamilton Island Golf Course is located on Dent Island - the island that sits adjacent to Hamilton Island itself. By ferry: Dent Island is accessed via a quick five minute ferry transfer from the Hamilton Island Marina. Your green fees include all ferry transfers. Note that private boats cannot dock at the Hamilton Island Golf Club. By helicopter: Hamilton Island Aviation offer direct flights from Hamilton Island and neighbouring islands including the mainland to Hamilton Island Golf Club. Getting to Hamilton Island: With it's own island airport and direct flights daily, most people choose to fly straight there. You can also fly to the mainland then catch a bus and a ferry - or even sail here yourself and stop for a few days in our 180-berth marina. There is no better place for golf holidays in Australia. Hole 1 The first hole is a medium length par 4 set at the foot of the highest peak on Dent Island. The stunning backdrop sets the scene for a journey that will be an unforgettable round of golf. The tee shot should be played short and left of the right-hand side fairway bunkers located 210m from the back tee. For the longer hitters, a carry of 230m over the left edge of the left-hand bunker should be the chosen line, as anything right will catch a steep swale off to the right rough. The approach shot is played to a large elevated green which slopes from back to front with two deep bunkers which should be avoided on the right. Hole 18 Home at last, the back nine on Dent ends with a punch. With the clubhouse in view, and Hamilton Island and Whitsunday Island behind, the tee shot here will fly forever. With an elevation drop of some 40m from the Hoop Pine tee to the landing area below, there is a lot that can happen in that time. Read the wind and hope for a long straight hit, as the ball will fly and run considerably on this downhill monster. The longest par 4 on the course, the two fairway bunkers at 230 and 250m are well within range and may be flown given the right wind conditions. From here a medium to long iron is required with care taken to avoid the bunkers short right and left of the large ceremonial green. A short walk to the clubhouse for a drink and the inevitable post mortems will close out a thrilling day. Clubhouse The stunning Chris Beckingham designed clubhouse is ideally perched to catch the soft sea breeze and to take in the stunning views of Passage Peak and the sparking Coral Sea.
